2008 FAQ's
NOTICE: We will delay the Got Guts start time by 1 hour to allow for park clean-up and safety checks. Events start at 9am rather than 8am!
 .
Will the Got Guts Event continue even if it's raining?

Yes!  This is a rain or shine event.  We will have tents set up for the Food fair, Celiac Screening, and other critical functions.  However, if we have lightning conditions, we reserve the right to delay or cancel if absolutely necessary in order to protect the safety of our participants and volunteers.  Please watch this web site for updates as Sunday approaches.
.
When is the last day I can register for Got Guts? online?

You can register online until Saturday, September 13, at 6pm.
.
.
What are the prices after September 6 and on race day?

Who can participate in the Kids 1K Trail Run?
This event is designed for smaller kids who might not want to run or walk the entire 5K distance.  All finishers get a prize.  We'll hold the Kids 1K run first so you can cheer on your little ones before running or walking the 5K.

Can I bring a stroller to the run or walk?
Sure. Keep in mind it's a grass trail so it's best suited to a rugged type of stroller. Also please start near the rear to avoid tripping any of the runners trying to get a fast start.

Who are the sponsors of the Got Guts 5K Event?
We're lucky to have generous sponsorssupporting this event. Please support these businesses and mention you appreciate their participation in Got Guts.

Yes!  We'll have awards for the following categories:
5K Overall winners: top 3 male/female
5K Masters winners: top 3 male/female

Kids race: all are winners :^)

Will you provide me with my finish time? Is this a chip-timed race?
All 5K run finish times will be posted online as soon as possible after the event.  We use a timing clock rather than chip timing.  This follows a trail-run tradition and helps us maximize our donation to the Gluten Intolerance Group, the beneficiaries of this event.

What are the t-shirts like?
They are white cotton t-shirts with our Got Guts logo.  This year you have your choice of either a womens cut or men's/kids standard T-shirt.

Are there massages at the finish line?
Yes!  Free massages, courtesy of Advanced Rehab

Are all the foods at the finish line gluten-free?
Yes!  We want our gluten-free participants to enjoy an event without the usual drill of 50 questions and reading every label.
.
I'm not a runner, should I come to Got Guts?
Sure! Many people come out to enjoy the food fair and skip the exercise. Register for the Food Fair Only option. The Food Fair is a great opportunity to try new gluten-free foods without having to buy in quantity.

If you missed Got Guts last year, you can check out the pictures here
.

What if I can't attend in person, but want to support the event?

If you cannot attend in person, you can still show support by registering for the "sleep in" option.  We'll mail you the race t-shirt and you can know you contributed to a worthy cause.  You can also invite your out-of-town family members/friends who support your gluten-free lifestyle to register for the sleep-in option.  Or you can mail a donation to:  Got Guts 5K, P.O. Box 941, Austin, TX 78767-0941

How can I invite my favorite company, gluten-free restaurant or product to be involved in the food fair?
To join the food fair the cost is minimal ($20 to cover table rental or free if they have their own table/tent). Contact Christine Egli
christine@gotguts5k.com

How can I get involved as a volunteer?
This is an all-volunteer event and we definitely welcome additional help to make the event a success. Please send an email to
marynegus@gotguts5k.com with your contact information and the type of things you like to do, plus your t-shirt size.  We need help preparing for the event and in the days leading up to the event, including the big day. We'll find something that fits
your schedule and interest.
Got Guts Celiac Screening Q&A

Will you offer free Celiac Screening at the Got Guts 5K?
Yes, thanks to a generous donation by Prometheus Labs and the Binding Site, and involvement from Dr. Lubin of Austin Gastroenterology in helping distribute the results, we can provide free screening for 300 people. Also thanks to our legal team from Strasburger and also Maureen Dolan and our volunteer nurses for their support. And one more thanks to Gluten free Keads for helping us arrange this screening! I'm impressed with just how many hands are involved in bringing this free screening to the community.
.
What if I'm a volunteer at the race, can I still qualify for free Celiac screening?
Yes, we appreciate our volunteers and they are definitely entitled to free screening.
.
How does the screening work?
We have several nurses who have agreed to volunteer collect blood draws at the Got Guts event.  We'll ship the samples to Prometheus Labs in California and the results will be sent to Dr. Lubin for appropriate distribution to the participants via mail or phone.
.
How long until we receive the results?
Results should be available within a few weeks or a month at the longest.
.
What if there aren't enough tests?

I'm from out of town, can I still come to the Got Guts 5k and receive the screening?
Yes, you will receive your results via mail or phone.

Where can I find out more about the Prometheus test we will use at Got Guts?
We will use the Prometheus tTG test which is an initial screening test for Celiac Disease.  This is a useful screening tool for people who believe they may have celiac disease or those 1st or 2nd degree relatives of known celiac patients that want to get tested since they have a greater risk of developing or having celiac disease.

Is the test we will receive at Got Guts a useful indicator of compliance with a gluten-free diet?
Yes, the tTG test is an indicator of compliance with a gluten-free diet.  More information here.

Where can I find out more about the full range of Prometheus tests available through physicians?
Here is a link to their patient brochure.  http://prometheuslabs2007.egofactory.com/Resources/Celiac/CeliacTesting_Patient_Info.pdf

Why should I get screened for Celiac Disease?
If you have undiagnosed Celiac, you are at risk for developing serious health conditions and damaging your digestive system. Celiac Disease affects one in 133 Americans and most are not diagnosed.  Many will have no symptoms.

What can I do to help with Got Guts 5K Run, Walk and Food Fair?
You can register and participate in the activities on September 14.  Or you can volunteer by sending an email to Mary Negus marynegus@gotguts5k.com.
